In 1999 the Port of Oakland held their first Women's Business Conference. The new conference was initiated by Cheryl Perry League, Director, Office of Equal Opportunity. The conference is intended to introduce women business owners to the Port staff and provide information to women businesses on more effective means of doing business with the Port. Lynne Leahy, President/CEO of a startup Hayward company, AquaPrix, Inc. attended the conference and built several new business relationships with the associates of the Port of Oakland. Soon after, Atu McKinney, Contract Compliance Officer and Stella Jacobs, Building Services Manager, agreed to meet with Lynne Leahy to discuss the advantages of bottle-less drinking water systems. Stella and Atu listened to Lynne's presentation regarding new technology for safer drinking water, they liked what they heard and immediately agreed to the installation of the new innowave 270™ units from AquaPrix, an authorized Dealer for innowave® incorporated.

The Port had been using bottled water for some time. They had thought they were doing the best thing for Port employees but they learned from Lynne that bottled water is not too closely regulated and in many cases, bottled water is not any higher quality than ordinary tap water, according to a recent 5-year study by Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC).

Stella and Atu were impressed with next-generationsystems from innowave incorporated, a subsidiary of Mutual of Omaha. Lynne told them that the systems are documented and certified to NSF Standard 62 and meet the USEPA Microbiological Water Purifier Standard (reduction of 99.9% of parasites, 99.99% of viruses, and 99.9999% of bacteria). Lynne also explained how the IDF™ 3-stage process of ion exchange, distillation, and filtration is capable of reducing virtually all biological, organic, inorganic, and radioactive contaminants.

"Implementing the innowave® systems at the Port of Oakland has been a win-win situation for us," said Stella. She looks forward to Port employees experiencing positive health benefits in the near future.

“The Women's Conference was a great success for us," says Lynne, "but I'd hope that even if we weren't a women-owned business, the Port would want this new technology to benefit their employee's health and safety."
